Traveling to Atlanta, Georgia?

August 24th, 2009 | by admin |

I’m traveling for business to Atlanta, Georgia in April of this year. My boyfriend will be traveling with me. Can you give me some ideas of things he can do while I’m in meetings? We will be staying in Midtown.

We will be staying an extra couple days just for us.Where are some really great places to eat? I’d also like to take a day trip and drive to the ocean. How far is it from Atlanta? Any really great sites to see along the way???

Thank you for any answers!
I am definitely going to drive to Savannah we’re staying in Midtown. I currently live 17 hours from any major body of water, therefore; 4 hours to the ocean isn’t so bad! Keep the suggestions coming!!!!!! GREAT IDEAS!

The ocean is pretty far, unless you go to one in S. Carolina. I’m not sure how far S. Carolina oceans are. Just be careful in Atlanta. The drivers are NUTS! I hate driving there! I’m not sure where to eat, but Lenox mall is nice, somewhere around that area will probably be good. Atlanta has the largest aquarium in the country, maybe even the world. I think that would be fun. Is he outdoorsie? He may like the Bass Pro Shop?? Is there a W hotel in Atlanta? They usually have a hip bar/restaurant. Have fun!

Atlanta is about a 4-hour drive to the coast. That is a long drive – but if you do it, go to Savannah and Tybee Island – lots of fun. The riverwalk in Savannah is pretty good.

There are lots of things to do in Atlanta – From Fernbank to cheesy stripclubs.

The Atlanta Aquarium is fairly nice.

Lake Lanier is really really low right now, but you can still do some fishing there.

I could recommend a couple sex clubs if you wish – but Email me directly for those, as I do not want to get myself banned.

Midtown has plenty of good bars for hanging out, and piedmont park is right near midtown – good for hanging out during the day.

Feel free to ask me directly if you are looking for something specific.

Things to do: depending on what days in April, you could have Braves/Hawks/Thrashers all possibly playing in town, there are tons of concerts here (great music town). Shoot some pool at the Independent, go to the Aquarium or ZooAtlanta (it’s not as bad as everyone says it is, I’ve been to lots of zoos).

Great places to eat: 5 Seasons Brewery, Carroll St. Cafe, Fogo de Chao, Apres Diem, Osteria, Radial Cafe, Flying Biscuit (those last 2 are more breakfast/brunch places, but very good). Fogo is pretty expensive (at least $40 a head), but while the others aren’t cheap, they’re not too expensive either. If he wants a really nice burger, try Smith’s Olde Bar. It’ll cost ya $11, but it’s big and it’s good! If you want nice steaks, try the Highland Tap. Great steaks for around $20-ish.

Driving to the beach is about 5 hours to Charleston or Savannah, so not an easy drive, but doable if you really want to. If you’re driving around town, make note of rush hours, they get pretty crazy, especially on I-285.

One of the best places to eat is Dante’s Down the Hatch, it’s a kind of fondu place but vary nice enjoyable. The CNN studio tour id fairly interesting The new World of Coke is o.k. if you do go to it definately see the 4-d movie it’s the best part. stone Mountain is fun is an outdoor attraction for some parts but it’s about an hr. drive from midtown.

Things to do: The Georgia Aquarium,. Zoo Atlanta, The New World of Coke, The CNN studio tour, shopping in Underground Atlanta (yes, it’s really underground), shopping at Atlantic station, clubbing all over the place, see a show at the Fox Theatre or 14th St Playhouse, or Cobb Performing Arts Center, go to a museum like Fernbank museum of natural history (also has IMAX) or the High Museum of Art…

Places to eat: my very favorite is Baraonda (Italian) in Midtown, which is right on Peachtree close to the Fox Theatre. I also like Vickery’s, on Crescent (a block off Peachtree) just south of 14th St.

Houston’s is also good — I know there’s one in Buckhead near Lenox Square Mall, but I think there might be one in Midtown or Buckhead as well. Las Palmeras on 5th St. has good Cuban food. If you go there, don’t be surprised that it’s in the middle of a residential neighborhood. In Buckhead, I really like Atlanta Seafood. In Decatur, I like Carpe Diem. Believe it or not, the cafeteria (on the top level) at IKEA in Atlantic Station has good inexpensive food! Violette on Clairmont Rd has wonderful French food.

Neighbor’s is a nice place to eat, especially on a warm, sunny day.

Well going to the ocean from Atlanta is about a 4-5 hour drive. There isn’t much to see on the way. You have better luck with seeing stuff in Atlanta north Georgia. While in Atlanta check out Atlantic Station, it’s a new area in Georgia, it is an outdoor kind of mall thing, with lots of new restaurants clubs. Maybe check out the High Museum of Art, Atlanta History Center, Georgia Aquarium (a good restaurant nearby by is Luckie’s Lounge), Oakland Cemetary (some famous people are buried there, like the inventor of Coca-Cola, Margaret Mitchell – the writer of Gone With the Wind, Bobby Jones, some former governors, mayors of Atlanta, stuff like that, they give tours of the cemetary, it really is an interesting place, also nearby is a great little place called Six Feet Under, you could go there for lunch or dinner. I would say if you want to take a day trip you should drive to Asheville, NC (about a 3 1/2-4 hour drive) – there is alot of nice stuff up that way, including you can tour The Biltmore Estate (they have a botanical garden, winery, hotel, etc.) Or if you want to go to the ocean or near it I suggest driving to Savannah (about 4-5 hours) and visiting Tybee Island, or Hilton Head, SC.
